In 2005, 1800 million tonnes of waste were buried underground, making landfilling the predominant disposal method. In contrast, incineration treated just 500 million tonnes of waste, slightly less than ocean dumping, which handled 600 million tonnes.

In the subsequent years, land burial underwent a consistent decline, dropping sharply to 600 million tonnes in 2008. Conversely, the amount of waste treated through burning almost doubled, reaching 900 million tonnes by 2008. This increase allowed incineration to surpass the other two options, making it the most widely used disposal method by the end of the period. In addition, despite a minor rise to 650 million tonnes in 2006, there was a gradual decrease in the figure for marine discharge to 550 million tonnes in 2008, making it the least utilized choice.
