Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Parents should be friends with their children. Use details and examples in your explanation.

From my perspective, I wholeheartedly agree that parents should be friends with their children.

First of all, being friends with children can encourage better parent-child communication. When parents are like friends, kids feel more comfortable opening up. This way, parents can understand their children's feelings and thoughts more deeply, and offer appropriate advice.

In addition, being friends helps parents guide children through their growth. In a friendly relationship, parents can gently influence their kids. For instance, when a child is facing a tough decision, a parent who acts like a friend can share their own experiences and perspectives. This can help the child make a more informed decision and develop in a well-rounded way.

wholeheartedly /ˈhəʊlˈhɑːtɪdli/ adv.

guide sb through…

make an informed decision

well-rounded /ˈwel ˈraʊndɪd/ adj.

The way I see it, I firmly believe that parents should be friends with their children.

The main reason is that it creates a harmonious family atmosphere. When parents and children are friends, there is more laughter and understanding at home. However, if parents always act in a strict or serious manner, children are more likely to feel stressed out.

Moreover, it helps children develop social skills. By interacting with parents as friends, children learn how to communicate, respect others, and handle relationships. For instance, they learn to listen to others' opinions, just like they do when chatting with their parent-friends. These skills are very useful when they interact with peers at school or in other social situations.

the way I see it 依我之见

harmonious /hɑːˈməʊniəs/ adj.

create a harmonious atmosphere

are more likely to 更有可能

interact with 与…… 互动

peer /ˈpɪə(r)/ n.

As for me, I disagree with the idea that parents should be friends with their children.

To begin with, this approach may lead to discipline problems. Too much of anything is good for nothing, you know. When parents are too friendly, children may not respect theirauthority. For example, a child might not follow the rules about bedtime or homework because they see their parents as friends.

Secondly, if parents act as both caregivers and friends simultaneously, it can confuse children. Kids may not know how to act around their parents. For instance, they might not be sure whether to be serious or casual in different situations. This confusion can make the parent-child relationship less effective in guiding the child's growth.

discipline /ˈdɪsəplɪn/ n.纪律

Too much of anything is good for nothing.

authority /ˈɔːθərəti/ n.

simultaneously /ˌsaɪmlˈteɪniəsli/ adv.同时地

casual /ˈkæʒuəl/adj.随意的

the parent-child relationship 亲子关系
