Some teachers are just lecturing (speaking) on the class and students only take notes; some other teachers make their class time on discussion and students sharing their ideas with their classmates. Which one do you prefer?

1、Unless students are actively using what they are taught, most of them would remember only a small fraction of the content presented in class. A lecture where students are simply asked to take notes may be an efficient way to deliver a wealth of information, it is however an inefficient way to intrigue them. In this sense, it is better to get students to study collaboratively in class, as it encourages constant reflections.

  Intrigue

  a small fraction 碎片化的

2、Students need to keep reflecting in class, because they may otherwise be absentminded or jaded, which would certainly hinder learning. To find an approach whereby such mental state can be avoided, we can first consider how to weary students of the class, and it must be teachers who keep lecturing and asking students to note everything down who can successfully accomplish this task. This is because without reflection, students, who are prone to tuning out, can hardly digest what they write on their notebooks. Worse, when they fail to juggle note-taking with absorbing the knowledge, which is highly likely, nothing would be achieved.

  absentminded adj.

  juggle v.

  digest v.

3、By marked contrast, teaching will be much more effective if students are allowed to discuss with their classmates. First, unlike learning in isolation where discouragement or a sense of hopelessness may set in, learning becomes more enjoyable when friends are able to help or motivate one another. Second, doing problem solving exercises in small groups, students may actively engage with the material being covered in class, which entails full understanding of the corresponding knowledge imparted. Third, brainstorming ideas for an open question with peers, students’ creativity may be sparked by the collision of ideas that come from different perspectives. In short, none of those activities may make students feel stale, and all of them help students study better.

  stale adj.

  spark v.

  collision n.

4、Admittedly, class discussion, at first glance, is distracting, especially for students who find idle chit-chat more interesting. In this case, students should be discouraged from discussing with each other in class. A closer look, however, suggest that it is the teachers, but not the method itself, who should be responsible for those digressions. In other words, teachers can do muchmore than simply assigning group tasks. They can also intervene by giving clear instructions and continuous supervisions to stop students from digressing.

  digression n.

  digress vi.离题
