  Doctor Achebe

In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in the choices travelers make for their accommodations. Many are now opting for privately owned residences over traditional hotels. This change is reshaping the travel industry and creating a competitive landscape between these two types of lodging. Do you think the increased competition between privately owned residences and traditional hotels is a positive trend? Why or why not?

  Kelly

Yes, it benefits homeowners by providing them with an additional income stream. For travelers, it often means more affordable accommodation options. For instance, during my last vacation, I chose a privately owned residence and saved a significant amount compared to hotel prices. This trend enhances travel experiences while supporting local economies.

  Paul

No, I don’t think it’s a positive trend. Staying in hotels offers more opportunities to meet new people and socialize. I stayed at a hotel last year and met other travelers during breakfast and in common areas. This aspect of hotel stays can enhance the travel experience by fostering new connections.

I believe the coexistence of privately owned residences and hotels is largely beneficial because it caters to the distinct needs of travelers. Apart from what Kelly mentioned, another beauty of dwellingin local people’s homes is the unique experience it offers, allowing tourists to immerse themselves in local customs and practices.【非谓语动词作状语】 Many homeowners enjoy engaging in conversations with their guests, and some particularly hospitable ones may even provide free transportation, guided tours, and regional specialties—experiences I personally enjoyed during my travels in Europe several years ago. However, such interactions are rarely found in traditional hotels, where, unlike what Paul mentioned, the only person guests typically encounter is the front desk staff, whose primary responsibility is to collect visitors’ passports and facilitate check-in.【定语从句】 On the other hand, for those who prioritize sanitation and safety, staying in a hotel presents more advantages. Many chain hotels adhere to established standards for their interior decor and safety management, which can be challenging for local homeowners to replicate. These allow tourists to make choices that align with their individual preferences. Therefore, the availability of both privately owned accommodations and hotels is advantageous for travelers.

  beauty n.

benefit, strong point, strength, upside, virtue, merit, plus

disadvantage, drawback, weak point, weakness, downside, defect, flaw, shortcoming, demerit

  dwell in v. 居住

  可以替换reside in / live in / inhabit,都表示“居住”。

local custom and practice n.

  hospitable adj.

  specialty n.

  prioritize v.

  sanitation n.

  adhere to v. 遵守

  interior decor n.

Apart from what Kelly mentioned, another beauty of dwelling in local people’s homes is the unique experience it offers, allowing tourists to immerse themselves in local customs and practices.

这句话的主句是“another beauty of dwelling in local people’s homes is the unique experience it offers”,提出了除Kelly提到的“省钱”以外的、住民宿的另一大好处,即能给游客带来独特的体验。后面的“allowing tourists to immerse themselves in local customs and practices”用非谓语动词作状语,写出了这种独特体验具体是什么。

However, such interactions are rarely found in traditional hotels, where, unlike what Paul mentioned, the only person guests typically encounter is the front desk staff, whose primary responsibility is to collect visitors’ passports and facilitate check-in.
