　　Nowadays, international tourism is the biggest industry in the world. Unfortunately, international tourism creates tension rather than understanding between people from different cultures. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

　　International tourism is booming: millions of tourists go to other countries to explore the outside world. Tourism enhances the mutual understanding between the local people and tourists. Some people hold opposite opinions. They think that international tourism causes tension rather than promoting understanding between people from different cultures.

　　The people holding the latter view suppose that tourists are likely to offend the local people because of the lack of knowledge of the local customs, which differ from their own. Moreover, tourism inevitably harms the natural resources and the cultural legacy, which may lead to the resentment of the local people.

　　However, I can hardly assent to this idea: the above mentioned rarely happens. In my opinion, international tourism does encourage the understanding between people from different countries. For one thing, without going to see for themselves, people may never know what other countries are really like and thus can be misled by hearsay or films and TV programmes, which, more often than not, are one-sided. For instance, one of my American friends told me that most Americans had a strange bias against the Russian people until some young Americans traveled to Russia and saw with their own eyes that the Russians are human beings just like them. Another example is that, with the development of Chinese tourism, people outside China start to realize that Chinese men no longer have long braids and Chinese women’s feet are of normal size now. Secondly, having seen the fine scenery or experienced the rich culture of other countries, tourists will have the desire to develop a good relationship with the locals, which certainly contributes to the understanding between them.

　　Some countries allow women to join the army. Some other people think army doesn’t suit women. Do you agree or disagree? Please state your reasons.

　　Many countries’ armies are mostly made of men, and some countries even do not have women soldiers. Lately, the issue whether the government should allow women to join the army has touched off a heated debate.

　　Some people argue that women do not belong to the army for the reason that being a soldier is too harsh for women. And secondly, if a war is waged, women can be a disadvantage to the army in the sense that women are physically weaker than men and thus have a poorer ability to fight against the enemy.

　　However, I can hardly go with this idea. I think women can join the army, and that the army needs them. In the first place, although women as a whole are less strong than men, there are some women who are more sturdy than most of the men. The government has no reason to turn them down if they want to join the army. In the second place, strength is not all that needed on the battle field, and other typical feminine virtues, such as endurance and carefulness, are essential. In the third place, there is work in the army that can be better undertaken by women, doctors, nurses and secretaries, for instance. Lastly, it is women’s right to decide for themselves whether they will go into army service or not and they should not be deprived of this right.In conclusion, I think the government should allow women to join the army.

　　Ancient people must be astonished if they know that the British watch American films and the Americans wear clothes made in China, because in their times exotic objects were rarely seen in other countries, let alone people in different countries enjoying the same films, brands and TV programmes. It is true that we are going global.

　　Some people hold negative opinions towards globalization in the sense that too much importing from foreign countries is a threat to national industry and may lead to the gradual loss of their own traditional culture. Moreover, the characteristics of different countries will fade away if globalization proceeds.

　　However, this view is rather one-sided. To my mind, going global has more advantages than disadvantages to the world as a whole. In the first place, it promotes acquaintance and goodwill between different countries. For example, the “China year” in France provided/constituted an opportunity for the French people to get in touch with China’s fantastic art works, great literature, etc., which arouses their interest in Chinese culture and thus enhances the friendship between the two peoples. In the second place, countries can learn from each other and go for the better together. Since each country has its advantages, communication between countries helps them improve what they are backward in. Lastly, instead of leading to the loss of traditional culture, globalization helps to preserve it. In order to be outstanding in world communication, a country must have its unique attraction, which lies in its traditional culture. Therefore, the government of a country should try its best to preserve its traditional culture. If human beings were still confined to the knowledge they knew, our world would not be so fantastic as it is. (280 words)
