在日常生活中，相信大家没少见 out of，它的意思不少，是一个非常好用，但有时候很容易被用错的一个组合，特别是当它与一些“奇怪”的成分组合时，比如 out of nowhere，那么到底是“在哪里”呢?

　　英语中有很多 out of 以及类似的介词短语，那么如何大概把握它们的意思呢?只要记住一点，就能准确定位数不尽的介词短语。

　　当介词后面接冠词或其他限定词修饰的具体名词时，此时的介词才有可能表示位置关系，否则的话多半都是介词的其他用法，这个就是要记住的一个准则，如 by the car，car 有定冠词 the 修饰，在这里表示位置关系，意为“在汽车旁边”，例如：

　　The child stayed by the car and awaited his parents.

　　那孩子待在车旁等着他的父母。

　　而 by car 中的 car 没有其他成分修饰或限定，因此这里不是表示位置关系，而表示交通方式，意为“乘车”，例如：

　　He'd rather walk to work than go by car.

　　他宁愿步行去上班也不愿坐车去。

　　还有如 out of wood 和 out of the woods，有定冠词修饰的 woods，表示森林，那么 out of the woods 表示的是位置关系，意为“出森林”，例如：

　　You were bitten by a snake and I carried you out of the woods.

　　你被蛇咬了，我把你带出了树林。

　　而 out of wood 中的 wood 没有任何修饰成分，因此这里不是表示位置关系，而是表示缺少木头，或者用木头制作，这也是 out of 最常见的两个意思，例如：

　　The risk-taker made a boat out of wood and sailed across the sea.

　　冒险者用木头做了一艘船，横渡大海。

　　名词没有其他成分修饰的介词短语意思比较稳定，如 on hand，意为“现有的”等;而有修饰成分的意思常被用作比喻，如 out of the woods，还可以用来比喻脱离险境，例如：

　　类似的还有 in the picture，除了在图片中的意思，它还可以意为“在局内“，例如：

　　With Ethan out of the picture now, Jason is likely to win.

　　那么 out of nowhere 怎么理解呢?查字典得知 nowhere 是一个副词，也有的字典把它当作代词或名词，特别是在一些短语中，这跟由 some 或 every 等限定词构成的 somewhere 和 everywhere。

　　在此类的短语中，where 相当于 place，那么 out of nowhere 相当于 out of no place，短语中的 place 有 no 修饰，在这里表示位置关系，因此这是理解 out of nowhere 的关键所在，又如 somewhere 相当于 some place，等等。

　　然而，nowhere 表示不存在的地点，那么 out of nowhere 更是不存在的，这个就好比 second to none，因为 none 是不存在的，那么 second to none 更是不存在的，它意为“首屈一指”等，例如：

　　In the output of grain, China is second to none.

　　在粮食产量上，中国首屈一指。

　　由此可见，out of nowhere 也有其他寓意，意为“突然出现，莫名其妙地出现”等，例如：

　　A ship came out of nowhere, scaring us off.
