  Lecture

  Task 1:

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Parents should be friends with their children.【

  Task 4:

positive and negative reinforcement

Dr. Diaz: Now it is generally accepted that education should be lifelong. Scholars should still be educated after they leave high school and college. What field do you think adults should study?

Andrew: They should be allowed to learn a second language because people need to communicate with others and communication skills are very helpful to their careers.

Claire: I think they should study art history.Considering that nowadays people work under great pressure, learning art can reduce stress and cultivate one's self.

First of all, the professor states that the risk of being cut could be reduced to acceptable levels. To be specific, as long as workers are given safety training, follow the proper safety procedures, wear protective clothing and given quick access to medical help when there is an injury, the safety of workers could be guaranteed. This directly disagrees with the reading passage which says that single-stream recycling can be dangerous for workers at the recycling center.

Secondly, the speaker claims that the single stream recycling could oppositely reduces waste when we look at this in a big picture. As the easy and convenient process of placing all recyclables in a single container encourages many more families to participate, they stop throwing stuff away as waste like what they do in the traditional system, which increases the overall quality of materials that gets recycled and reused. This compensates for the comparatively small amount that gets contaminated.Again this contradicts what is stated in the reading which believes that contamination from materials not being separated well is unavoidable in single-stream recycling.

Thirdly, the speaker maintains that although the single steam system spends more money, they are less costly to operate. Unlike the traditional program which requires two trucks to pick up family's recycling materials with one for each type, single stream recycling uses only one truck to pick up all the recyclables, thus saving money from the reduced fuel and labor cost. As a result, the overall cost of operating the whole program reduces significantly when the initial outlay of building the facility is spent. However,in the reading, the writer holds the opinion that single-stream recycling systems are expensive to build.
