Question

Your professor is teaching a class on education. Write a post responding to the professor's question. In your response, you should do the following:

-Express and support your opinion.

-Make a contribution to the discussion in your own words

An effective response will contain at least 100 words

Doctor Achebe

We've discussed methods teachers employ to make their course content more engaging for high school students. One possible method is using class time to discuss the ideas students learned in a lecture or assigned reading. While some believe that having students discuss the material with classmates is beneficial, others consider it a waste of class time. What do you think is the most important consideration for teachers when deciding whether to include opportunities for group discussion during class? why?

Claire

I think class size is a key factor when deciding whether to include group discussions. In smaller classes, it’s easier for students to share ideas and actually hear each other. But in larger classes, discussions can get chaotic or leave some students out. If the setting isn’t right, group work might end up wasting time instead of helping.

Paul

The difficulty of the course should be a big factor in deciding whether to include group discussions. If the material is especially complex, talking it through with classmates can help students better understand it. For example, in my physics class, our group discussions often helped me see things from different angles and made tough concepts more manageable.

Apart from what Claire and Paul mentioned, I believe the most important consideration for teachers is selecting appropriate content to ensure that students can thoroughly preview the texts before class. Other factors, such as the purpose of the class, class size, and course difficulty, may also be significant. However, if students have not completed their preview—meaning they do not understand the gist of a theory or the main ideas and specific details of the essays being discussed—then the time spent on group work is wasted.【条件状语从句+同位语】 In other words, an effective class requires both well-designed teaching and students’ cooperation. For example, when I was studying English literature in the UK, all courses were delivered in seminars. Students who had read the novel and essays in advance benefited greatly from the discussions, while those who came to class without proper preparation could only sit silently.【定语从句+让步状语从句】 Some of them complained about their tight schedules and heavy workloads. Therefore, I believe that assigning a moderate amount of content for preview is crucial for the success of group discussions.

gist n.

Reading for gist requires less detailed comprehension.

seminar n.

例句:

I’m giving a seminar on the latest developments in genetic engineering next week.

If you’re going to come, please let me know in advance.

assign v.

UN troops were assigned the task of rebuilding the hospital.

However, if students have not completed their preview—meaning they do not understand the gist of a theory or the main ideas and specific details of the essays being discussed—then the time spent on group work is wasted.

这句话的主句是then the time spent on group work is wasted. 其条件是“if students have not completed their preview”,即学生没有完成预习。

Students who had read the novel and essays in advance benefited greatly from the discussions, while those who came to class without proper preparation could only sit silently.
