The education of young people is highly prioritised in many countries. However, educating adults who cannot write or read is more important and governments should spend more money on this. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Traditionally, education of young children is always given the top priority in the majority of nations, but prioritising the instruction for illiterate adults is highly recommended by some educationalists. Personally, I fully advocate such recommendation and deem that the corridors of power should allocate more budgets to this.
▷ illiterate adj. 不会读写的，文盲的
▷ corridors of power n. 权利走廊(= government)
Admittedly, it is justifiable for some to refute such proposal for the
reason that some adults, especially the elderly or those who are engaged in
repeated low-skilled work, seem to earn their daily sustenance based on abundant
experience without barriers, even though they are unable to read or write.
Besides, in comparison with young children, who are at their best stage to
assimilate new techniques and thus can be easily nurtured into elites in sundry
domains, adults are more likely to be inhibited by self-consciousness,
consequently incurring the low learning efficiency. However, the aforementioned
argument holds no water, which indicates that behind education of adults are
▷ refute vt. 驳斥
▷ assimilate vt. 吸收
▷ elite n. 精英
▷ hold no water 站不住脚
The apparent argument in its favour is that such policy can definitely bring convenience to those undereducated people in their daily life. To illustrate, there are either instances where the senior easily get lost in the elaborate network of metros since they fail to understand the instructions or cases where people showing ignorance of dosage and warnings misuse the medication, thus spawning tragedies. Hence, wiping out illiteracy for adults should be prioritised. // Additionally, if illiterate adults seize such chance to acquire new working techniques, especially when robots are gradually replacing them to do those repeated work, they will secure a more decent job, and the whole society can thus enjoy a more vigorous workforce.
▷ undereducated adj. 未受良好教育的
▷ elaborate adj. 复杂的
▷ ignorance n. 无知
▷ spawn vt. 酿成(贬义)
▷ wipe out illiteracy 扫除文盲
▷ secure vt. 获得
To recapitulate, eradicatingilliteracy facilitates the nation to increase economic diversification and optimise industrial structure. Therefore, authorities should invest funds in the education of non-literate adults.
▷ recapitulate v. 总结
▷ eradicate illiteracy 扫除文盲
▷ optimise vt. 优化
