  2024.4.6 Speaking Task 1

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People’s social skills have declined as their use of technology has increased.

Some adults believe that young people have become excessively dependent on or even addicted to electronic devices and should try to use them less. Do you agree with this point of view? Explain why or why not. [2024.01.24] [2023.04.29]

  Sample answer

Well I disagree with the statement. In fact, technology provides more opportunities for socializing with others. For example, we can start a conversation with friends anytime we want, sharing lives; Also even working from home, we can easily stay connected with colleagues and clients. It seems that we may talk to each other face-to-face less often, but we’re practicing social skills in a more convenient way. Plus, for introverted individuals, they may be reluctant to organize good thoughts. So online communication is offering a more comfortable environment. Without feeling the pressure of direct interaction, they can better communicate with others, conveying ideas more clearly and are naturally becoming more social rather than being forced to.

  Claire:

  Paul:

Your professor is teaching a class on sociology. Write a post responding to the professor's question. In your response, you should do the following:-Express and support your opinion.-Make a contribution to the discussion in your own words. An effective response will contain at least 100 words.

  Doctor Smith

This week, we will be discussing space exploration. Some people think that it is a waste of money for governments to fund space exploration. Others disagree with this view arguing that space exploration is a valuable and necessary investment for our future. They think that it is worthy for governments to fund space exploration. I want to know what you think about this topic. Do you think that governments should fund space exploration? Why or why not?

  Claire

I don't think that governments should fund space exploration because it will be too costly to build spaceships and develop related technologies. Though space exploration tech costs billions, it doesn't offer direct benefits to most people, which makes its funding a controversial issue.

  Andrew

Personally, I do think that all the costs will be worth it. The potential scientific discoveries and technological advancements could have far-reaching impacts that justify the initial investment. Imagine the new inventions that might come from this exploration. Such technology could greatly improve our everyday lives.

(背景加理由1)After the invention of rockets paved the way(铺路) for space exploration, new projects including weather satellite, global positioning have been benefiting everyone. (表达立场)Hence, I totally agree with Paul's opinion that funding space exploration is a boon(福音). (理由2)In view of the decreasing natural resources on Earth, it is indispensable to delve into the space for more resources, ranging from fuels to minerals. Some asteroids are rich in valuable elements and precious metals that are relatively rare on Earth, such as gold and platinum. In this case, mining minerals and even establishing colonies there would be extremely profitable.(改写引用)Indeed, exploring the space is costly and those social programs which directly impact our life need government investment. However, the overall benefits can help justify(使正当合理) the cost. (123 words)
