Each other 可谓是家喻户晓，是一个非常友好的代词，因为它不是接在动词后面作宾语，就是接在介词后面作宾语，意为“互相”，然而它有一个异性兄弟 one another 却较鲜为人知，那么它们到底是不是同一个东西呢?

　　从语法角度来看，each other 和 one another 的含义基本一样，它们用来表示一个群体中的每个成员都为对方做了一些事情，例如：

　　我认为这段时间我们相互有了很多了解。I think we've learned a lot about one another in this session.I think we've learned a lot about each other in this session.

　　然而它们还是有细微的差别的，它们都被称作相互代词 (reciprocal pron)，换句话说，这类代词用来表示两个或两个以上的人进行了某种类型的行动，所有相关方都得到了该行动的结果或好处。

　　根据不同的消息来源，each other 较 one another 常用，更常在小说、电视节目和口头媒体中出现，这可能也是它没有 one another 正式的原因，而 one another 稍微有点正式，更多地出现在学术背景或报纸上，但如果说话者有偏好，他们往往会坚持使用 each other，例如：

　　They are very fond of each other.他们非常喜欢对方。

　　We have to try to help one another.我们必须试着互相帮助。

　　Each other 由两个单数代词 each 和 other 组成，诞生于古英语晚期(大约公元1150年前)，one another 在16世纪进入英语。在18世纪，这两个相互代词之间有着明显的区别：

　　Each other: 两个人One another: 三个人及以上

　　根据以上这种古老的区分，each other 和 one another 是不能互换的，例如：

　　The members of the duo don’t speak to each other anymore.两人不再交谈。

　　The members of the trio don’t speak to one another anymore.三人组的成员不再互相交谈。

　　从逻辑上讲，each other 指的是一种相互联系，而 one another 指的是同时存在的几个相互联系，那么将 each other 用作三人组意味着只有一个人与另一个人有联系(反之亦然)，但与第三个人的关系仍不清楚。另一方面，one another 涉及几个相关方，因此不用来谈论两个人之间的关系。

　　随着语言的变化， each other 和 one another 可以交替使用，each other 在某种程度上反映了一种熟悉感，常用于两个人，在与熟悉的人相处的情况下，倾向于使用 each other，而一般化的陈述用 one another，例如：

　　My grandparents have looked after each other their whole lives.我的祖父母一辈子都在互相照顾。

　　Let’s share some secrets with each other.让我们互相分享一些秘密。

　　We, as humans, must care for one another.作为人类，我们必须互相关心。

　　Apes usually spend much time on going over one another's fur.类人猿通常会花很多时间在彼此的皮毛上。

　　需要注意的是，each other 和 one another 的所有格形式分别是 each other's 和 one another's，例如：

　　Jason and Isobel hated each other's ways of speaking.杰森和伊泽贝尔讨厌对方说话的方式。

　　They often hang out with one another's friends.他们经常和彼此的朋友出去玩。

　　在使用 each other 和 one another 的过程中最容易犯的错误是用 us 或 ourselves 代替它们，例如：

　　我们彼此认识二十年了。正确：We’ve known each other/one another for twenty years.错误：We’ve known us for twenty years.错误：We’ve known ourselves for twenty years.

　　因此在使用 each other 和 one another 的过程中，要较真的话，就按 each other 用于两个人或事物，而 one another 用于三个及以上的人或事物。
