Body 1:Netherlands, France and Sweden

  Body 2:UK, Germany

The line graph illustrates changes in the proportions of employees who were absent from work due to illness for 5 days in Netherlands, France, Sweden, Britain and Germany between 1991 and 2001.

Overall, France witnessed the most dramatic change in the rate of illness absence, while the figure in Germany and UK remained relatively stable. Also, Germany had the lowest absence rate throughout the given period.

  - France

  - Germany

  Body paragraph 1

Looking at the information in more detail, we can see that the figures in Netherlands, France and Sweden had seen more noticeable changes in the given decade. Specifically, there was a sharp increase from 4.8% to the peak at 5.5% between 1991 and 1992 in Netherlands, followed by a significant drop to only 4% in the next 4 years. Similarly, after a slight rise to roughly 5.1% in 1992, the figure in France fell remarkably to only 3% in 1996. Subsequently, the former saw a noticeable growth by 1.5% in 2001, whereas the latter kept stable until the final year. By contrast, Sweden witnessed a marked rise in the percentage of sick leave from 3% to 4.6% in the 10-year period, overtaking the figure in France in 1996.

Netherlands,France,Sweden

  Body paragraph 2

However, such significant changes were not seen in the other two countries. Originally, only 2.1% of the staff in UK asked a leave from work because of illness. Afterwards, this figure underwent some fluctuations and finally climbed by roughly 0.2% in 2001. Likewise, although the first 2 years experienced a modest decline in the illness absence rate in Germany from 1.8% to 1.5%, this figure maintained roughly unchanged until the end of the period.

UK, Germany
