  【考场题目回忆】:

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

For success in school or work, having the ability to adapt or adjust to changing conditions or circumstances is more important than having excellent knowledge of a job or a field of study.

With knowledge updated moment-by-moment in such a fast-changing world, workers and students cannot solely depend on their pre-existing know-how, no matter how excellent it is, to make success happen. In fact, it is the adaptable individuals who are open and willing to adjust tosuit transitions who are more likely to outperform others in schools or workplaces.

  Solely adv. 单独的,仅仅的

  Suit v. 适合,适宜

  Outperform v. 超过,胜过

Adaptability skills include a variety of skill sets, and the most notable one is communication skills. With effective communication skills, adaptable individuals, proactively seeking out additional information or asking colleagues for clarification, can better cope with what is beyond their experience when conducting a new and unfamiliar project. By marked contrast, in face of such project, workers of high level of competence may be too self-assured to obtain fresh information, thus coming to nothing. Even though they may eventually come up with a solution, the process may be too long, and omissions are inevitable. Creative thinking is another typical adaptability skill. Compared with workers resting on existing excellent knowledge, adaptable workers often develop new ideas to market or design products, meanwhile endeavoring to adapt to the changing market. This is especially important in this era when the market changes with each day passing instead of remaining unchanging, because failing toacclimate to such change may produce products that are behind the time.

  Proactively adv. 主动的

  Self-assured adj. 自信的,胸有成竹的

  Omission n. 疏忽

  Acclimate v. 适应新环境

  Behind the time 落伍的

In addition, the ability of accommodating to changing schedule is also asteppingstone for success in study or work. Specifically, individuals who can cope with the unexpected and the unscheduled can better manage stress, adjusting the state and attacking the assignments. On the contrary, those who can hardly get prepared on short notice may be overwhelmed by the pressure and negative feelings, and defeat is thus highly possible. Take my last job, whose work hours are neither fixed and norsynchronized with my partner’s timetable, as an example. Now that I was an unadaptable person, a person with a “to-do” list and hate it when something not on my list arises, I often became agitated when assigned with new tasks on short notice. Consequently, when such negative feeling stroke, I could hardly focus on my tasks, let alone finishing them excellently. A lesson was therefore learnt, whether one has excellent knowledge of a job, he should primarily be adaptable.

  Accommodate v. 适应,容纳

  Steppingstone n. 达到目的手段

  Attack v. 奋力处理,全力应对

  On short notice 在很短的时间内,急忙

  Synchronized adj. 同步的

  【conclusion】 略 。
